La puta y la ballena - Sbaraglia & Llorens-01Vera, a one-time Spanish novelist who gave it up for marriage and a child, is coaxed by her editor and former lover to write captions and commentary for a cache of photographs and unsent letters by an Argentinian killed during the Spanish Civil War that he’s discovered and wants to publish in book form. At a crossroads in her own life — she feels stymied in her marriage and she’s worried about a lump in her breast — she travels to Argentina to find out more about the photographer, Emilio, and Lola, the woman he addressed those letters to and never sent. The movie cuts back and forth between the past and present and is lushly evocative and romantic with broad hints of reincarnation and a dash of magical realism. If I’m ever lucky enough to dance the tango with a ghost I hope it’s Leonardo Sbaraglia’s.
