Enter the Void

DIRECTOR: Gaspar Noé | WRITERS: Gaspar Noé, Lucile Hadzihalilovic | CAST: Nathaniel Brown, Paz de la Huerta, Cyril Roy, Olly Alexander, Masato Tanno, Ed Spear, Emily Alyn Lind, Jesse Kuhn | France

An idiotic, self-indulgent, over-the-top, puerile, pretentious mess that’s insanely repetitive and way, way too long. I loved it. I’d rate it higher but I can’t overlook the worse than awful acting — what does it tell you that a crummy-even-for-a-child actor (Emily Alyn Lind) turns in the only halfway decent performance? — and I’m irritated that with all of his vision and this production team to assist him, Noé cut corners with mismatched film stock and widely variable sound. I must make special mention of the opening credits which are truly, truly magnificent — they had me laughing from the start and if I’d been in a movie theater I’d have applauded. Seriously. Bravo to typographer Tom Kan. The following clip isn’t quite complete since the credits themselves are preceded by 20 seconds of pitch black screen. (To clarify, I saw 154 minute cut.)
