The War Game [TV documentary]
DIRECTOR: Peter Watkins | WRITER: Peter Watkins | UK
It is not surprising that the BBC declined to air Peter Watkins’ The War Game in 1965, for the imagery Watkins uses to depict the aftermath of a “tactical” nuclear strike on the south of England are deliberately modeled on images from the aftermath of the Allied bombing campaigns over Germany and Japan in World War II, images that were still relatively fresh in the minds of the viewing public. Rather than a true documentary, The War Game is filmed as a magazine-style television news program with staged scenes dramatizing what might happen were the Soviet Union to unleash tactical nuclear weapons on Britain. Powerful, bleak, unrelenting.
