The Top Ten lists for five of the directors who participated in this year’s Sight & Sound poll have been released online: Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann, Martin Scorcese, and Quentin Tarrantino. They’re pretty much what I’d expect from them, with Allen’s and Coppola’s lists being fairly conventional, Michael Mann’s slightly odd, Scorcese’s a bit off the beaten track and idiosyncratic (I just don’t understand what he sees in Salvatore Giuliano), and Quentin Tarratino’s being deliberately kooky and wacky and show-offy and tiresome. Like his own movies.
“This is the dialectic – there is a very short distance between high art and trash, and trash that contains an element of craziness is by this very quality nearer to art.” – Douglas Sirk
