Le Diable probablement | The Devil, Probably
DIRECTOR: Robert Bresson | WRITER: Robert Bresson | CAST: Antoine Monnier, Tina Irissari, Henri de Maublanc, Laetitia Carcano, Nicolas Deguy, Régis Hanrion | France
Robert Bresson outdoes himself in Le Diable probablement. There is no greater demonstration of the idea that the point — of life, of anything — is ultimately that there is no point. What’s it about? It deals with young people’s anomie and it features soul-crushing drug use and escapes into mindless promiscuous sex. Off screen, and not really. (It’s also Bresson fan Dennis Cooper’s favorite, so you can kind of guess what the movie’s tone is.) It’s not entirely surprising that the film was restricted to adults in France. Powerful, bleak, funny.
