DIRECTOR: Matthew Bright | WRITER: Matthew Bright | CAST: Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Brooke Shields, Bokeem Woodbine, Dan Hedaya, Wolfgang Bodison, Amanda Plummer, Michael T. Weiss, Conchata Ferrell | USA
Forced and unfunny, with air quotes around every line of dialogue, an implied wink at the audience with every action. Faux campy exploitation flick garbage.
31.May.13 UPDATE: I was challenged by a friend over why I so disliked Freeway but not Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. My response was:
FREEWAY just isn’t very well done, for one thing. And it’s cheap looking — cheap as in low budget. It’s also smug and condescending and the attitude is very prep school naughty boys making fun of the townies in tone. PULP FICTION was made by a wiseass, yes, and it’s smug too, but I never got that classist condescension from it — or from Tarantino generally — that I did from FREEWAY….FREEWAY just wasn’t an adult’s movie. Calling it “collegiate humor” would be stretching it which is why I went for prep school. And Reese Witherspoon cannot hope ever to top her drunken confrontation with a cop. *That* was sheer brilliance.
