Orfeu negro | Black Orpheus

DIRECTOR: Marcel Camus  |  WRITERS: Marcel Camus, Jacques Viot, Vinicius de Moraes  |  CAST: Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, Marcel Camus, Fausto Guerzoni, Lourdes de Oliveira, Léa Garcia, Ademar Da Silva  |  Brazil

Orfeu negro is a sentimental and unsophisticated retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set in a favela in Rio de Janeiro at Carnaval time. It’s amateurishly acted for the most part and the screenplay is pretty crude. But so what? It’s glorious to watch and boasts one of the greatest musical soundtracks in the history of the movies. Says who? Says me. The last 30 seconds or so shows us what sheer joy in being alive looks like better than almost anything I’ve ever seen in the movies.
