Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux [1962]

20Mar12 – 10 – Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux (Jean-Luc Godard: 1962)

VIVRE SA VIE (1962). I’m gobsmacked. I knew vaguely what the film was about, but saying that it’s a film about a woman “descending into prostitution” would be like saying PICKPOCKET is about a man “descending into thievery”: yes, but…. Speaking of which, this film echoes PICKPOCKET in all sorts of ways, and not just PICKPOCKET but also DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST (the gorgeously shot sequence showing Nana writing a letter to her future pimp clearly references analogous scenes in the Bresson; I think so, anyway). And of course there’s also Dreyer’s PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC. A word I never thought I’d use for a Godard film: stunning. 10/10. [3/20/12]

  1. […] exception of the Vertov. I’m surprised by Frenzy, but thrilled with Au hasard Balthazar and Vivre sa vie and, especially, with Szegénylegények / The Round-Up. Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:LikeBe […]
