Zéro de conduite [1933]

08Feb12 – 8 – Zéro de conduite (Jean Vigo: 1933)
ZÉRO DE CONDUITE (1933). It’s odd to see a movie for the first time all the way through that until now I’d only seen in clips or in other films that it influenced, in some cases profoundly. That said, it’s sloppy and disjointed and amateurish and I could really do without some of the surréalisme (putting a fake beard on a dwarf and making him a pompous authority figure may have been daring in 1932, but I don’t care: I hate it), but it’s got about 10 minutes altogether that stand up to anything ever in film. 8/10.
