Fargo [1996]

05Jan12 – 3 – Fargo (Joel Coen: 1996)
Maybe if I’d seen it when it came out so that whatever was fresh about it actually was fresh, if it ever actually was. A black comedy that isn’t funny, it’s an endlessly extended joke that is neither cartoonishly horrific nor horrifyingly cartoonish enough to make any real impact. It’s like an underwritten Saturday Night Live skit that drags on way past the point at which it should have been ditched for the next skit. The acting is uniformly amateurish, although Frances McDormand very occasionally shows flashes of something more. Repellent. 3/10. [1/5/12]
