Lakshya [2004]

01Jan12 – 7 – Lakshya [ लक्ष्य, Target] (Farhan Akhtar: 2004)

I rang in the New Year with LAKSHYA (2004). I’d wanted to see this movie for quite some time and it was much better than I feared but not as great as I’d hoped. Bollywood heartthrob hunk Hrithik Roshan gives an exceptionally good performance as Karan Shergill, an aimless rich kid who discovers himself, not without some false starts, as an officer in the Indian Army during the “Kargil Incident”, yet another battle between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. With Amitabh Bachchan as the commanding officer and Preity Zinta, a young Meg Ryan-type but sans the manufactured charm, as the love interest. Spectacular mountain cinematography, grating Indian nationalist jingoism. Five musical numbers including the sensational “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon” which showcases Hrithik Roshan’s mighty dancing skills. (In Hindi and Hinglish.) 7/10 for the film as a whole, 10/10 for “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon”. [12/31/11]
